The Campus of Currie Green sits within a historic landscape that beautifully blends the past with modern living.
The area of Currie was first designated for military use in 1911, in preparation for World War I. Established as Currie Barracks in 1933, named after Sir Arthur William Currie, this site has played an integral role in Canada’s military history. Having transitioned from military operations to a flourishing residential community since its decommissioning in 1998, Currie Green honours its heritage by preserving and repurposing historic buildings, allowing every resident to connect with the area’s legacy.
The Canadian Government funded the construction of a military base in Calgary, spending $1.6 million on the creation of Currie Barracks, which was named after General Sir Arthur William Currie. It became the largest military site in Alberta and helped to alleviate some of the economic challenges posed by the Great Depression.
During World War II, Currie Barracks continued to serve as an important training center for various corps of the Canadian military, including the Royal Canadian Air Force, which constructed an airstrip that housed two British Commonwealth Air Training Plan stations.
With Calgary’s population increasing beyond 100,000 people, Currie Barracks began housing major units, such as Lord Strathcona’s Horse, and became a major military center serving regimental units.
The Officers’ Mess Hall was designated a National Historic Site and hosted international guests, including H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, during their visit to Calgary.
As a result of changing land use over time, sections of land were purchased by educational institutions and local businesses, while portions remained in use for other purposes, and airstrips ceased to operate.
The Canadian Armed Forces came together, leading to Currie Barracks being renamed Canadian Forces Base Calgary (CFB Calgary). However, the locals still fondly refer to it as Currie Barracks.
As troops moved to Edmonton, CFB Calgary was decommissioned and sold to Canada Lands Company, paving the way for exciting redevelopment opportunities.
The CFB West Master Plan received the green light, envisioning Garrison Woods as a vibrant community where people can live, learn, work, and play —a crucial step in revitalizing the area.
The Currie Barracks Community Plan received approval, setting the stage for the final phase of development on the old military site.
Construction kicked off on the first single-family homes, marking the official launch of the Currie Barracks community and welcoming its first residents.
In a nod to its past while looking ahead, Currie Barracks was simply called “Currie,” signalling a fresh chapter in its story.
